Volunteer Service Areas

The following is a brief description of various Service Areas within Memorial. Shift availability varies, and may change based on current Ambassador Schedules. We do not assign Service Areas until Ambassadors are ready to volunteer, and have met all requirements, including attending New Ambassador Orientation. If you are friendly, caring, kind, and reliable, we would love to speak with you about volunteering in one of our Service Areas. Thank you for your interest.

Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) Reception

Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our Healthcare team, ambassadors will assist the professional staff in assuring that the comfort of patients, families and visitors are met throughout their visit. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Meet, greet, and assist patients and family members for pre-testing and pre-surgery. Escort and assist others who are lost.

Breast Care Center (BCC) Reception

Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our Healthcare team, Ambassadors will assist the professional staff in assuring that the comfort of patients, families and visitors are met throughout their visit. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Pull, purge and/or file patient films; assist Coordinator(s) and/ or Nurses; and assemble patient planners.

As part of our team, Cookie Baker Ambassadors will assist in assuring each patient, visitor, and guest of Memorial Hospital has an exceptional experience by baking and passing out free cookies. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: baking and passing out cookies to patients and visitors; cleaning area; resupply stock for cookie baking; deliver trays to various areas within the hospital; and wash or use hand sanitizer often on hands. **Focus on SERVING patients, guests, and family members: Quality of Service, not Quantity of Cookies

Emergency Room Concierge

Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our team, an ER Concierge Ambassador, you will meet and greet all that enter the hospital through the ER doors with a BIG warm smile and welcome. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: anticipating the needs of the guests while making rounds in patient and waiting rooms; listen to the guests; passing out and pick up blankets, wash cloths, or towels as needed by guests; use staff names when directing guests to areas of the ER (i.e.: “Sue (nurse) will help you at the window”); assist staff members with different tasks; escort visitors and guests to their destination; and wash or use hand sanitizer often on hands.

Escort

Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our team, Escort Ambassadors assist the professional staff in assuring each patient, visitor, and guest of Memorial Hospital has an exceptional experience. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Escort patients & visitors to their destinations throughout the hospital; meet and greet all visitors at the front entrance; discharge patients. Walking & pushing of wheelchairs is required with exposure to entire hospital and every department.

Eucharistic Minister

Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our team, Eucharistic Minister Ambassadors will assist in assuring each patient, visitor, and guest of Memorial Hospital has an exceptional experience by working closely with our Chaplain Office. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Distribute communion to Catholic Patients and families that are being treated at Memorial. A patient does not have to be an inpatient, but may be here for a treatment or procedure. Pray with patients on request.

As part of our team, Flower Room Ambassadors will assist the professional staff in assuring that each patient, family, and visitor has an exceptional experience at Memorial Hospital. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Receive and deliver flowers, gift baskets, balloons, greeting cards, etc. to patient rooms.

Gift Shop

Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our Healthcare team, ambassadors will assist the professional staff in assuring each patient, visitor, and guest of Memorial Hospital has an exceptional experience for all retail guests that enter the Cottage Place Gift Shop. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Greeting/welcoming customers, running the cash register, and floral deliveries when necessary.

Greeter (located at our B elevator)

Greeter Ambassadors will enhance the experience patients, visitors, and guests experience while at Memorial. Duties will include giving directions, offering cookies when available, walk guests to locations if needed, and show where the courtesy phone is located. If needed, B Elevator Ambassador will use the courtesy phone to help guests to locate information and then direct them to the proper location. B Elevator Ambassadors will be kind, and offer a friendly smile and hello to all who pass.

Information Ambassador

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Meet & greet visitors and give directions; Use computer database to look up and give patient room numbers and directions to area.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Reception

Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our Healthcare team, ambassadors will assist the professional staff in assuring that the comfort of patients, families and visitors are met throughout their hospitalization. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Answering door, phone, & get patient families for staff, escorting guests to destination within the unit, cleaning charts & counters & put supplies away, stocking & Stripping rooms, stock med rooms and any isolation carts, pass out pagers and notify RN of #, empty the shred box, miscellaneous approved tasks.

Mail Delivery

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Sorting and delivering mail to doctors’ offices through Memorial’s campus, as well as patient rooms.

NICU Reception

Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our Healthcare team, ambassadors will assist the professional staff in assuring each patient, visitor, and guest of the NICU has an exceptional experience. NICU Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Answering phones; transferring calls; buzzing visitors onto the unit; meet and greet parents and visitors; provide instructions; filling/stuffing books, cutouts for clotheslines, light tidying of waiting room, entertaining siblings.

NICU River City Rockers (Infant Rocking Program)

*This is an area with a high interest and low turnover. THERE IS ALWAYS A WAITLIST! Those interested can be on the waitlist for months to possibly years. Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our Healthcare team, ambassadors come to Memorial to rock babies in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit and interact with the NICU staff. Follow all safety precautions as trained during new ambassador and rocker orientations. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: coming in for 1 shift per week for 1-2 hours to hold and rock babies at times when parents are unable to be in the hospital. Depending on the developmental needs of the baby, Rockers can rock, sing, and/or read to babies. Rockers are specially trained for this program. Rockers do not feed, dress, change diapers or walk around with babies, or perform any clinical tasks. *This is an area with a high interest and low turnover. THERE IS ALWAYS A WAITLIST!

No One Dies Alone (Compassionate Companion)

Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our Healthcare team, ambassadors come to Memorial to sit with and just be present with someone near the end of life, who has no one available to keep vigil. This position requires compassionate ambassadors who will give each patient dignity and love when they most need it. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: forming a schedule to be bed side with the patient until patient passes away, family comes in, or the patient is transferred to Hospice House or another facility. This is secondary service area, which means volunteers are also asked to volunteer in another more regular position.

Nutritional Services

Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our Healthcare team, ambassadors will assist staff with clerical tasks and special projects for Nutritional Services as needed.

Patient Portal

Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our Healthcare team, ambassadors will assist the professional staff in assuring that the comfort of patients, families and visitors are met throughout their hospitalization. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Unit rounds to be completed based on census provided by Medical Records. The Ambassador will use communication skills including clarity, friendliness, confidence and empathy to greet each patient. A script will be used to explain the benefits of accessing their personal health records by signing up for My Beacon. There is an IPAD that may be used to possibly assist sign up for patients.

Patient Comfort Rounds

Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our Healthcare team, ambassadors will assist the professional staff in assuring that the comfort of patients, families and visitors are met throughout their hospitalization. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Completing peaceful rounds for all patients on the units unless charge nurse states otherwise. The Ambassador will greet each patient by using a script, and simply provide comfort through support, attentiveness and purposeful rounding.

Pediatrics

Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our Healthcare team, ambassadors will assist the professional staff in assuring that the needs of patients, families and visitors are met throughout their hospitalization. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: rocking infants, reading books, playing games, assisting with art projects, stocking patient rooms, talking with patients and families, passing beverages and linens, preparing blank charts, preparing security packets. Ambassadors will also be asked to help maintain the toys, supplies and facilities used by the children. This is an area with a high interest and low turnover therefore positions are not always available. You may be asked to volunteer in another service area before a position in PEDS becomes available.

Pediatric Specialties

Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our team, a Pediatric Specialties Best Friend Ambassador will engage children and parents waiting for appointments in MPS park area. Pediatric Specialties responsibilities include, but are not limited to: using pre-created crafts, activities, and character building tools to enhance families’ overall experience and feeling of value, worth, and positive role modeling while visiting the clinic.

People Mover

Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our Healthcare team, Ambassadors will assist the professional staff in assuring that the comfort of patients, families and visitors are met throughout their visit. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Assisting visitors and guests to their destination, anticipating the needs of the guests while making rounds. Understanding the equipment used on cart; controls (i.e. appropriate speed, backing up, flashing light, etc.), portable telephone and patient safety protocol.

Pet Therapy Teams

Ambassadors will enhance the care provided to our patients and their families. As part of our team, Pet Therapy Team Ambassadors will assist in assuring each patient, visitor, and guest of Memorial Hospital has an exceptional experience through interactions with the dog. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: providing comfort through the use of certified therapy dog teams and their handlers. This will include visiting patients and staff in various areas as scheduled, or on request.

Radiology

As part of our Healthcare team, Ambassadors will assist the professional staff in assuring that the comfort of patients, families and visitors are met throughout their visit. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: rounding on patients and their families while in the waiting area, assisting to keep children occupied while parents have their procedures, passing out warm blankets to patients when needed, keeping waiting area neat/clean. Other duties as assigned.

Rolling Library/Magazine Cart

As part of our Healthcare team, ambassadors will assist the professional staff in assuring each patient, visitor, and guest of Memorial Hospital has an exceptional experience. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Providing recent periodicals to all of the adult patient rooms of the hospital, providing used and donated magazines for all of the waiting rooms, making sure there is a variety of up to date magazines, and replace out of date magazines.

Surgery Waiting Area

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: checking in families, answering phone, & get patient families for physician, escorting guests to pre-op or areas within the unit, stocking coffee supplies, cleaning and organizing waiting area and miscellaneous approved tasks.
